Another New Year...

  • Mood: content
  • Music: whistling and then howling wind. Followed by anxious Westley grunting. Just great.
  • Treats I'm Eating: Searching the Christmas room brings no new goodie findings. So sad!
  • Where's Westley: Grunting around the house. It`s windy again. Just great.
D`Artagnan would like me to post his wishes for the New Year.  Don`t tell him the New Year officially started 5 days ago- he`s not very good at keeping time nowadays.

1. No more of this loud wind stuff- especially at night when I would like to sleep.  It`s scaring Westley and he`s annoying when he is scared.

2. More goodies for everyone- with diet ads on TV every five seconds, I am reminded on how everyone needs to actually enjoy living.  Have a cookie- it`s ok! You can eat some broccoli stump later to balance it out.  Really.

3. Learn how to count properly.  Math skills are important.  Something tells me the government people think that lowering this GST stuff will encourage Daddy to buy me more cookies.  He just saves a nickel! That isn`t enough to buy me more cookies! It can even pay for one cookie!  Now lowering this Income Tax stuff would definitely help Daddy buy me more cookies.  And the good cookies too.  And maybe some for Westley.

4.  Spend time with the family.  While it takes me a bit longer to physically find them, family is everything.  Not only are they handy to have around, they are also good company.  Even the noisy birds.  Really.

Happy New Year everyone!
Love DÀrtagnan

D'Artagnan's Christmas Wish List 2007

  • Mood: happy, happy, happy, excited it's Christmas time again!
  • Music: CSI reruns. Dad's on holidays
  • Treats I'm Eating: rawhide candy cane. and if I have my way, that stinky bone wrapped under the tree..... ...... ......
  • Where's Westley: taking a nap in the foyer
Well it's Christmas time again, and despite being blind, D'Artagnan can still manage to find the artificial Christmas tree and try to take his presents... or any other presents that happen to be lying around!  The Jingle bells are up around the bottom of the tree to alert everyone, and the low hung tinsel is prepared to catch him sparkily furred if he tries again.  And he will!

Here is his wish list for this year:  it's probably the same as last years, but he's a dog, so his wishes don't change very much.

1. a stinky bone
2. another stinky bone
3. a smaller stinky bone to distract Westley as I steal his larger stinky bones
4. a nice new soft patch of carpet to eat my stinky bones on
5. someone to make the birds stop cheeping as I eat my stinky bones- they are very distracting
6. a big fence to keep Max my hamster from sneaking up on me while I'm eating my stinky bones
7. some soft chewy cookies (as you can't just eat stinky bones all day long!)
8. extra large turkeys this year for Christmas Eve, Day and New Year's dinners
9. I'd like some Chinese Moon cakes [even though it's not Moon Festival yet] as I really love them.  [Seriously- he has moon cake radar, sonar and GPS]
10. a peaceful and wonderful new year for everyone on Earth!

.... and to think Westley (the "greedy one") just wants a new stuffed toy sheep.

Max's "Big" Escape

  • Mood: content
  • Music: computer whiirrrr
  • Treats I'm Eating: carrot bits
  • Where's Westley: sleeping in his cave box [box on its side]
Well it took over a year, but Max finally escaped from his home.  He somehow managed to open the twisting door on one of the ball tubes [probably by standing on it with his massive hamster weight] and the door fell out.  No one is sure if Max fell out with the door, or if he decided to jump for it.

Either way, Paul found Max this morning, scared and hiding in the corner- right next to his house.  There is no evidence that he actually traveled anywhere, or if he relished any of his short founded freedom.  He was glad when Paul woke up K, and she put him back  in his home.  He immediately went to bed.

Out of all my hamsters, Max appears to be the "stupidest" as his number of escape attempts and successes are essentially zero [not counting this morning].

The smartest was definitely dear old Freddie- my first hamster years ago- who managed to escape thousands of times we estimate as not only did she leave her home, but in the morning, she would return to her home and break back in.

I hate Boom-boom noises.

  • Mood: Scared silly!
  • Music: Music? Who cares about music? It's boom-booming outside again!!
  • Treats I'm Eating: Eating? How can you think about eating at scary times like this????
  • Where's Westley: Running around scared too! See it's not just me!
Apparently every summer the Celebration [or Symphony as it used to be called] of Light happens in Vancouver.  Supposedly beautiful fireworks light up the harbour and thousands of people go down to the beach to watch the fireworks set to music.  It is a competition, with three countries trying for the prize, and then there is the finale where they burn off all the extras.

I have a problem with this event for 4 reasons:

1. I don't like the beach because water comes back and forth, trying to give you a bath.
2. People are messy at the beach and leave their stinky garbage everywhere.  [They are apparently better behaved this year as there is a civic strike and people are kind of behaving for once.]
3. While people are allowed to go to the event, dogs are not because of people's safety.  [There is also a mad dash for the skytrain after where dogs could get trampled, so I guess I'm actually glad I can't go.]

and 4thly, the most important...

Fireworks go BOOM!

I hate things that go boom.

I hate thunder and firecrackers, noisy cars and trucks, falling heavy things, drum sets, the 9 o'clock gun [a cannon that goes off every night in Vancouver; perhaps the one "British" thing that still happens here] angry Paul when a referee does something stupid during soccer games...

I don't like fireworks.  And neither does Westley.

I think those are two great reasons why no one should ever use fireworks.

Or at least try not to make Boom-boom noises.

My Birthday!

  • Mood: Very Happy and excited about cake!
  • Music: Soccer report is still on!
  • Treats I'm Eating: I had steak today, and some carrots, and now cake!
  • Where's Westley: looking at my cake too- he's jealous!
Today was my birthday.

We celebrated by having steak for dinner [my request], but had potato salad, bean salad and Thai noodle salad with Garlic Bread instead of fruit salad.  I'm not mad though- I got steak.

I also got a goodie wrapped in paper- Westley got a smaller one, mainly to distract him from mine.

K just baked me a yummy carrot cake, which I am now watching cool as K posts in my blog for me.  It smells very tasty and I can't wait to eat it!

Wishes for my Upcoming Birthday!

  • Mood: tired with this soccer stuff.
  • Music: Guess what's on TV .... oh and look ....
  • Treats I'm Eating: I could eat all the soccer balls in the world!!!... but then they'd just make more.
  • Where's Westley: Sleeping in another new box. What is up with this dog and boxes?
My birthday is coming up again!

Next week, July 29th, will be my 10th birthday! My family and I can't believe I'm 10 already.

My 9th year was a wacky one, especially with the health developments, but I will also remember it as the year I got my hamster Max and received a lot of new dog food and cookies Westley does not like at all- more for me!

These are my wishes for my birthday this year...

1. Great weather would be nice- no rain, but not blaring heat either... I'm a Lhasa Apso covered with hair! Once it gets over 27 degrees, I get hot and sweaty... and smelly  <-- Kay does not like that part.
2. Yummy food of course- it's the family tradition for the birthday being to choose what food to eat.  I would love to celebrate my birthday with a a nice roast- I'll be nice and share it with others.  A good bone in it would also be nice, especially if it's so big Westley can't walk off with it.  I would also like a veggie salad, and fruit salad with over ripe mangoes and papaya in it- no raspberries- they make me sneeze.
3.  For dessert, I hope K will bake me a carrot cake again- it's very yummy and Westley hates it... it's very hard to find cake that Westley doesn't like.  The bonus is that Max will be able to have some too!
4. I would love a new bed area that is only for me.  Westley keeps taking mine, even though he has his own bed/drawers/pillows/towels/blankets etc. all over the place.
5. I would like to have my own Dogissimo outlet in my backyard.  In case you haven't heard, some business people in Austria have created some ice cream flavours for dogs and I would love to try some.  If I can't get that, I'll settle for some Breyer's Vanilla or strawberry on a crunchy cone.  Note: the cone must be crunchy or else I won't eat it.
6.  Less visits to the vet.  It smells funny there and every time I go, someone sniggers about my weight.  They are just so jealous!
7.  A chance to play with the neighbour kids.  They like to play with their bikes in our driveway as ours is doublewide, paved and has a bit of a ramp.  On the other hand, I can't see bicycles any more, so it's probably better for my tail if I stay inside.  I would like for Westley to stop barking at them already- the boy is like 8 years old now and this barking is not scaring him off or anything, so Wes should just give it up already!
8.  No more soccer on TV.  K and I have had it with all these games... what? The u-20s are over? Aw too bad... guess that's it for soccer.... what? the Premiership is getting ready for pre-season training already? Aw man....

My 9th wish is that everyone has an amazing rest of July!

Love and sniffs,
D'Artagnan

July Update

  • Mood: happy
  • Music: soccer games on TV- stupid U-20s.... gr... you're on all day long!!!
  • Treats I'm Eating: yummy carrot
  • Where's Westley: sleeping in his new box- I'll let him keep it.... for now ;)
There is just way too much soccer- oh sorry football- for my tastes.  It's on TV all the time, sometimes in different languages [K: Paul has been watching Copa America games on the TLN channel, which broadcasts in Spanish and Italian].  When there isn't a game on, there's some repetitive junk about Beckham and his move to the US.  Not that I don't like him or anything- I have nothing against him as he's a good player, and since I've never smelled him, I can't say anything bad in that department either.  Paul and Dad are going to the Whitecaps vs Galaxy game in October, and already can't stop talking about it, even though it's months away!!!!  And of course they are not taking me.... again.... though I probably wouldn't have any fun at the game since I can't physically see it- minor detail.

Anyways, last week I had to go to the vet again as I broke a toe nail [upper unused thumb nail on front foot] and it got infected.  K thinks I broke it when I probably got it caught in Westley's hair when I was pinning him down, so  I guess it serves me right.  The vet had to "knock me out" [did NOT enjoy] and take out the nail.  The worst part was that he bandaged up my foot so it was hard to walk much less lick my foot.  The bright side is, he gave me a tasty bag of cookies only for me.  Dad does something to them before he gives them to me [K: antibiotics pill goes inside the cookie flap] and then I get to eat it twice a day.  Westley gets none ! I make sure to rub it in of course!

This morning, I had to go back to the vet again [I hate that place!] and the lady pet doctor removed the bandages and declared my toe all better.  It does feel a lot better now, and I can now walk normally.  I'm to continue to eat the yummy cookies until they run out- gasp! say it ain't so!- and if I start licking my foot, I get yelled at.  The cookies make up for it.

Anyways with the big men out at a double header soccer game tonight, it means good eats and guilty-pleasure-tv with K.  Hooray for the Food Network!!

Love, D'Artagnan

2:19 PM

Well the school year is almost over....

  • Mood: Happy. It's naptime!
  • Music: nothing right now.
  • Treats I'm Eating: Just ate some chicken pie for lunch!
  • Where's Westley: Sleeping on his pillow bed [which I happily destroyed a few days ago, so now it's a sad old pillow on some broken cardboard! That'll teach him for jumping me from behind!
which means that Kay is at home more since they don't need teachers on call as often.  This is nice as she actually eats breakfast and lunch, and shares them with me, unlike Paul who eats when he feels like it, and rarely shares unless its something he doesn't really like.

To update everyone about my health, my diabetes is stable now, and I am getting about 8mg shots of medicine twice a day.  It's kind of nice actually, and I make sure to remind Kay or my dad at 6 that it is time for my medicine. [Kay: We think he actually likes getting the shots as it is something only he gets rather than both him and Westley getting something.  We also tend to give D'Artagnan a cookie afterwards, so that probably plays a factor, as well as it is a reminder that dinner or breakfast is coming soon.]

I have also regained some more weight, so I am back to being the 31 pound Lhasa Apso- the most "successful" of my kind ladies- you'll never meet another Lhasa guy like me who has been able to procure tasty food like me! The best part is that I'm back to being heavier than Westley, so even if he tries to surprise me from behind, I can still over power him.  Trust me, sitting on Westley is extremely satisfying, especially when he gives up in his futile attempt to usurp my supreme status in the family.... even Max, my hamster, has higher status than Wes now after chasing Westley around the house in his ball.  Silly Westley can't figure out a place to hide where Max can't find him, even though there is tons of places he could go to get away!

Anyways, we hope that summer comes soon [but not too soon to cause more flooding in the province- don't worry we are in the Lower Mainland and on a hill] and everyone has great days where ever you are!

Been awhile...

  • Mood: content- I had lasagna for lunch
  • Music: Computer whiirrrrr
  • Treats I'm Eating: nothing right now.
  • Where's Westley: sulking in the corner, waiting for Daddy. {The lasagna was cold}
It has been quite a while since the last post- though not on purpose in any way.

Spring is here in BC, and both doggies have been enjoying some sunshine outside.  Kay has been working more than last year, so she is able to be on the computer to post in the blog less as often... though she admits she has still found time to waste time on computer games.

As for my health- some good and some "bad" updates to pass along.  My diabetes is in check- my medicine is working- and I have been able to gain some weight back.  My back knee is still stiff, but it's not popping any more when I bend it, so I guess my ACL injury is better.

The main development the past few weeks has more bothered the family than myself.  True to my Lhasa Apso heritage and canine diabetes progression, I now have cataracts in both my eyes, so I can't see very well any more- though to be truthful, I could never see very well to begin with because of all the hair in my face.  I see better when there is light, so the family now makes sure they leave the lights on when they go out.  They have also promised to try not to move the furniture around, but I still walk into it quite regularly... but that's no real change either since I've always accidentally walked into things.  [Kay points out now that at least I won't get into fights with the mirror anymore because I can't see my reflection and jump to the conclusion that another dog has entered the house to take my stuff!]

Westley of course could care less about my condition- and it is only recently that he has actually given me a head start on the food dish without having to be restrained by Paul.  Though, part of me wonders if that is because of all the dog food warnings out there... he's just waiting to see if it is safe for him to eat it first...

Anyways, my prayers to the families who have lost their family members due to the dog food problems- and I guess the cats too.

Senseless short cuts in the name of profits is just horrible, even if it leads my family to buy Campbells Chunky Beef stew for my dinner instead of real dog food.  I'm willing to eat it cold, it's only sissy dogs like Westley that go over board and demand it to be heated...

==================================

Go CANUCKS Go!

{Every time you are on TV, I can bark loudly, and then I get cookies to get me to shut up.  I hope you go a long way in the playoffs! }
